How to travel by metro
The metro is the fastest way to move around Baku. To enter you use the contactless BakuCard, which can be topped up at the stations. A ride is cheap and does not depend on distance — a single fare applies across the whole network.
The BakuCard
To pass through, you tap the BakuCard on the turnstile. The card is bought and topped up at ticket offices and machines in the stations. The fare is flat — about 60 qapik a ride (as of 2025), the same for all lines and distances.
The essentials, briefly
On 6 November 1967. It was the fifth metro in the USSR and the first in the entire South Caucasus.
Three lines — red, green and purple — and 27 stations of about 41 kilometres in total.
Many old stations are true underground palaces with marble, chandeliers and mosaics. The most famous is 'Nizami', with mosaics after the poems of Nizami Ganjavi.
