Palaces below ground

The Baku Metro is the only metro in Azerbaijan and the first to open in the entire South Caucasus. It was launched on 6 November 1967, and has since become one of the capital's main arteries: every day the metro carries hundreds of thousands of passengers.

But the Baku Metro is more than transport. Its older stations were built as underground palaces: with marble, chandeliers, mosaics and national ornament. This site is about the history of the metro, its stations, lines and trains, and about how it lives today.
